Eurosceptic conservatives win parliamentary elections in Poland

Exit polls from Poland show the opposition Law and Justice Party is headed for a victory in parliamentary elections with 39.1 percent of the votes.

The victory by the eurosceptic conservatives will put an end to eight years of rule by the centrist Civic Platform of Prime Minister Ewa Kopach, who only received 23.4 percent of the votes. Based on the polls, the conservatives picked up two hundred and 42 out of 460 seats in the lower house of parliament, which is enough to govern alone without forming a coalition. The exit poll prompted Prime Minister Kopach to concede defeat. Meanwhile, the conservative leader, yarrosswaff katchinski, has declared victory and paid tribute to his twin brother, the late president Lekh katchinski, who died in a 2010 jet crash in western Russia. It is for the first time since the collapse of communism in 1989 that the leftist parties have been voted out of parliament.
