A powerful bomb attack by the Taliban militant group has ripped through a convoy of US-led NATO troops in the central part of the Afghan capital, Kabul.

The Afghan media reported that an explosion took place close to a market on Sunday morning when a Taliban bomber targeted the convoy that was passing through Joy Shir area in Kabul during rush hour.

“The incident occurred in Police District 2 in Kabul city, the target was a convoy of foreign troops crossing the area,” said Najib Danish, deputy spokesman for the Interior Ministry, adding, “There are casualties, however, we cannot confirm the figures.”

Following the blast, security forces and medical teams rushed to the scene of the incident and the injured were taken to hospital. The security forces have also cordoned off the area.

Kabul police spokesman Ebadullah Karimi also said “three civilians were lightly injured, two NATO vehicles were damaged; however, no casualties were inflicted on NATO troops.”

Taliban militants have claimed responsibility for the attack via a Twitter account.

Earlier this month, the Taliban carried out a car bomb attack near the Russian embassy and Afghan parliament in Kabul.

The blast in Kabul came amid heightened tensions in the country following deadly clashes between government troops and the Taliban around the northern city of Kunduz, which the militant group seized for a short period of time at the end of September.

Afghanistan is gripped by insecurity nearly 14 years after the United States and its allies attacked the country in 2001 as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror.

Although the attack overthrew the Taliban, many areas across Afghanistan still face violence and insecurity.
