A car bomb has exploded near a prison facility in Libya’s Tripoli where senior officials of the regime of former dictator Muammar Qaddafi are held.

“A car bomb exploded close to the Al-Habda al-Khadra prison, where there is also an interior ministry brigade headquarters,” prison spokesman Othman al-Ghellani said, adding that the car blew up around 150 meters from the prison's perimeter wall.

The maximum-security facility is where some senior figures of the former dictatorial regime are being held, including Qaddafi’s son Sa’adi, the former intelligence chief Abdullah Senussi and more than three dozen other officials. Sa’adi, who once served as the captain of the Libyan national football team, was extradited from Niger last year and is expected to attend a trial next Monday in a court inside Habda.

The prison is under the control of Fajr Libya (Libya Dawn), a militia coalition which controls the capital and opposes the country’s internationally recognized government, which is based in the east. Videos had previously emerged showing prison guards in Habda ill-treating detainees, including Sa’adi.

Ghellani said no one was hurt in the attack, which apparently came after a woman parked her car near the prison “under the pretext of wanting to visit an inmate.” The explosion, however, inflicted damages on two nearby vehicles.

Tripoli has seen a rise in the number of bomb blasts lately with the most recent one coming 10 days ago. The Libyan branch of the Takfiri Daesh terrorist group claimed the car bomb near the Tripoli headquarters of the Mellitah Oil and Gas company. Reports also emerged of a bombing Tuesday although they were not confirmed by Fajr officials.
