Iraqi special forces have managed to recapture a university campus from the ISIL terrorist group in the western province of Anbar.

Military sources said on Sunday that Iraq’s Counter Terrorism Service (CTS), known as the “Golden Brigade,” seized the university on the outskirts of the provincial capital, Ramadi, on Sunday.

“The Golden Brigade managed to liberate Anbar University with backing from the army as well as air support from the coalition and Iraqi aircraft,” Brigadier General Abdelamir al-Khazraji said.

Al-Khazraji, who is the deputy commander of CTS forces in Anbar, also said that government forces have now full control over the university and its surrounding area.

“Our forces liberated the university early Sunday and now have full control of it, following a week of fierce clashes,” Al-Khazraji said, adding, “The Iraqi flag is flying above the university presidency once again.”

A statement from the CTS earlier said that the Iraqi government forces had “inflicted heavy human and material losses to [sic] the enemy.”

Meanwhile, Ramadi Mayor Dalaf al-Kubaysi said the ISIL terrorists have fled the area following the assault.

Iraq’s al-Mirbad news channel reported that dozens of ISIL militants were killed during the latest military operation.

The Arabic al-Hadath TV channel said at least 15 ISIL terrorists were killed in an around the university over the past few hours.

The government forces recently launched a massive operation to recapture the strategic city of Ramadi in the west from the terrorist ISIL group. Ramadi fell into the hands of the militants in May, when Iraqi forces were concentrating on recapturing cities and districts north of the country.

Iraqi troops backed by volunteers have gained more ground in their fight against the Takfiri ISIL terrorists in the province in recent months.

Violence has plagued the northern and western parts of Iraq ever since ISIL launched its deadly terror campaign in June 2014, and took control of portions of Iraqi territory.
