Iranian female shooter clinches gold in 2015 Universiade

Iranian female sports shooter Mahlagha Jambozorg has demonstrated a praiseworthy performance at the 28th edition of Universiade in South Korea, clinching a gold medal to add to the country’s medal tally at the sports event.

On Tuesday, the 23-year-old Iranian sportswoman claimed the gold after earning 623.5 points at the women’s 50m prone shooting competitions at the Naju Jeollanamdo Shooting Range in South Korea’s southwestern city of Gwangju, located some 330 kilometers (205 miles) south of the capital, Seoul.

Her South Korean opponent, Miso Kim, picked up 622.4 points to finish runner-up and take home the silver medal. Thailand’s Sununta Majchacheep ended her campaign with the total points of 622.4 and a third place.

Japanese, Chinese and Thai athletes, Seoyoung Yoo, Chen Dongqi, Ratchadaporn Plengsaengthong, collected 622.3, 622.1 and 621.8 points respectively to land in the fourth to sixth spots.

The Iranian squad, consisting of Maryam Talebi, Najmeh Khedmati and Jambozorg, amassed 1,851.4 points in the women’s 50m prone shooting contests on Monday, and was awarded the bronze medal.

The Thai outfit was the top-ranked shooting team in the competitions with 1,864.4 points, followed by second-place Chinese, who pocketed 1857.5 points. South Korea stood fourth with 1,850.2 points.

The 2015 Summer Universiade, which marks the 28th edition of the sports event, opened in the city of Gwangju on July 3, and will run until July 14.

Iranians sportsmen and women are in action across eight sports. They are competing in artistic gymnastics, soccer, volleyball, taekwondo, shooting, archery, athletics and rowing.
