How does a small business, reliant on electricity to keep its machines working, stay open when the power goes out? It doesn't says Mma Smenya. She runs a bakery and when the electricity goes off, she has to close. This costs her money and threatens the livelihood of her shop and those who benefit from it.
Outages are an issue affecting more and more small- and medium size businesses in SA. The state power company’s spokesperson, Khulu Phasiwe, says tariffs are set to rise which means more pressure on already struggling businesses.
Although Eskom took a blow being downgraded, Phasiwe says they are already in the process of rebuilding their status.
There appears to be no end in sight for the power outages, that means no end for business owners struggling to remain open.
Eskom says the Medupi power station in Limpopo province will provide an additional 800mw to the system by the end of June. But for the likes of Mma Semenya and many others, it will take up to three years to ensure stability on the national grid.
