Ukraine's parliament approved a draft law to grant special status to parts of east Ukraine. The law is supposed to broaden the economic, political and administrative powers of the eastern districts and grant amnesty to the paramilitary in line with the agreements signed in Minsk.
However, the law drew critique from the self-proclaimed republics.
According to the amendments, Donetsk and Luhansk are allowed to receive autonomy only after local elections under Ukrainian laws take place there. Some experts say it is not possible to achieve.
Even some Ukrainian lawmakers admit that the law is untenable but ceremonially neccessary for a nominal implementation of the Minsk accord signed between Kiev and pro-Russians.
The truce in the east in largely holding. The two sides reported withdrawal of the heavy weapons. But despite the progress still few people here believe that there is stable peace in the frontline.
