Four people, including French and Belgian citizens, have been killed and eight others wounded when unidentified gunmen attacked a restaurant in the Malian capital of Bamako, and opened fire indiscriminately.

Police said on Saturday that at least one gunman entered La Terrasse restaurant in Bamako's lively and busy Hippodrome district shortly after midnight, and started shooting. The body of the French national was recovered from La Terrace. A Malian police officer and a guard of a private home were found dead in the street just outside the restaurant, while a little further away the body of the Belgian citizen could be seen.

"This is a terrorist attack, although we're waiting for clarification. Provisionally, there are four dead – one French national, a Belgian and two Malians," a policeman said on condition of anonymity.

He added that the slain police officer was passing the scene at the time of the shooting.

A senior intelligence official, requesting anonymity, said two people have been arrested over the shooting at La Terrasse restaurant, which is popular with expatriates.

The French embassy in Bamako has called on all French nationals in the city to exercise caution if they need to leave their homes.
