A US central command official has announced that an offensive to liberate the Iraqi city of Mosul from the ISIL will be in spring. The Pentagon also says US troops might attend the offensive.
Kurdish officials have welcomed such a choice.

The coordinator of the US-led coalition has echoed similar comments. General John Allen spoke of Mosul’s ground offensive with the backing of the coalition forces. His remarks stirred controversy in Baghdad where Foreign Minister Ibrahim Ja’afari quickly denied any foreign intervention in Iraq.

According to analysts, without regional coordination such a battle could cost Iraqi a lot. They say it is important to cooperate with countries who have been actively involved in the fight against the Takfiri terrorists specially Iran.

Meanwhile, many questions have been raised about the offensive, especially about the role of the popular committees who’ve been pivotal in backing the Iraqi army and have always expressed distrust in members of the US-led coalition.

The battle for Mosul will be an unconventional house-to-house battle and will take place in inhabited regions. This battle is seen as the most decisive offensive in Iraq’s campaign against the ISIL. It is for these reasons that analysts stress: hastiness in this battle is not an option and its loss is a price the people of Iraq cannot afford.
