Russian President Vladimir Putin began a two-day visit to Egypt on Monday. Putin was welcomed by his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, at Cairo's international airport. Several Middle East files are to be discussed between the two heads of state, including the Palestinian cause, and the situations in Libya, Yemen, and Syria, where Egypt and Russia share similar stances.
The issue of fighting the global challenges caused by the ISIL takfiri militants, and other terrorist groups in the Middle East, is to also feature highly on the agenda of the Sisi Putin talks.
The two sides had signed a preliminary multi-billion dollar arms deal, when Sisi visited Moscow twice over the past year.Egypt has begun to focus on the East, in an attempt to balance its international relations that have been dominated by tight military and financial cooperation with the West, in the era of ousted dictator Hosni Mubarak. But Egyptian officials insist that cooperation with Russia will not be at the expense of that with the US.
Egypt and Russia which hold a long history of trade partnerships, since the days of the former Soviet Union in the era of late President Gamal Abdel Nasser, are to also discuss cooperation in the fields of energy, industry, and tourism, along with the extension of sound cultural links.Cairo and Moscow are to also set to discuss the exclusion of the US dollar, and the use of national currencies, in bilateral trade.
