Thousands rally in Germany against anti-Islam PEGIDA movement

Thousands of Germans have held a demonstration in the city of Leipzig against a recent wave of far-right anti-Islam rallies.

The protesters chanted slogans against a group calling itself Patriotic Europeans against the Islamization of the West, or PEGIDA. The anti-PEGIDA protesters also called for tolerance and described the ideas of the extremist movement as unfounded. The demonstrators shouted that refugees are welcome in Germany. PEGIDA demonstrations have swelled in recent weeks. However, the group's anti-immigrant and anti-Islam protests have been widely condemned by the church, political leaders and businesses.
