A blast has rocked the Landulpho Alves Refinery (RLAM) of Brazil’s state-owned oil giant Petrobras, leaving three employees injured.

The incident occurred on Monday near the northern city of Salvador, with Petrobras announcing an investigation to find the cause of the explosion.

The bodies of the wounded workers were burned between 10 and 75 percent.

“The injured were quickly tended to by refinery medical personnel and taken to hospital. The company is providing the necessary assistance,” Petrobras said in a statement, adding that no environmental damage was caused.

Brazil's largest company also rejected any possible effect on market supply.

The RLAM refinery produces 323,000 barrels a day of over 30 oil derivatives including diesel, gasoline, kerosene, asphalt, and lubricants.

As well as supplying Brazil’s northeast, the company's products go to the US and Argentina.

Stuck in a huge corruption scandal, Petrobras refines 2.1 million barrels of oil a day and is seeking to increase capacity to 3.9 million barrels a day by 2030 as its current production level is not sufficient to meet domestic demand.

Earlier this month, RLAM saw a fire in its paraffin unit after a faulty valve at the plant leaked kerosene.
