France’s Yellow Vest protests

French police have once again clashed with Yellow Vest protesters in several cities across the country. Security forces used tear gas and water cannon to disperse the crowd. In return, the demonstrators threw rocks at the security forces. Several people were injured. It was the 26th consecutive Saturday of anti-government rallies across France. The protesters slammed President Emmanuel Macron’s economic policies and called for reforms. They vowed to keep coming back to the streets until their demands were met.

London protest

Thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters have marched in London to mark the annual Nakba Day. Several prominent figures made speeches demanding that Britain end support for Israel.

Venezuela tensions

The Venezuelan opposition leader has once again urged his supporters to protest nationwide against President Nicolas Maduro. Juan Guaido called on protesters to back several opposition lawmakers that have been charged by the government for taking part in an abortive military coup on April 30. Allies of US-backed Guaido were arrested after the widely-publicized putsch failed to attract any sizable number of army defectors or massive civilian support. On Friday, Maduro accused his sacked intelligence chief of being a CIA mole and the architect behind the failed coup.

Saudi war on Yemen

At least seven civilians have been killed in the latest Saudi attacks on Yemen. The victims, including six children and a woman, were targeted by Saudi fighter jets in Qa'tabah district in the southern governorate of Dhale. Seventeen others were also injured in the airstrike. Saudi Arabia, along with some of its allies, launched a war on Yemen in March 2015. More than 15,000 Yemenis, most of them civilians, have been killed since then. The war has taken a heavy toll on the country’s infrastructure and destroyed many hospitals, schools and factories.

Welsh pro-independence push

Just one week after tens of thousands of Scots marched to demand "freedom from London rule", thousands of Welsh have followed suit. Several thousand Welsh patriots marched through country’s capital Cardiff, condemning the British government for its unjust rule, incompetent handling of Brexit and harsh austerity policies.

India elections

In India, voting is underway in the sixth of marathon seven-phase general elections. Over 100 million people are eligible to cast their ballots for 59 parliamentary constituencies across seven states, including the capital New Delhi. Nearly one thousand candidates from various political parties are in the race in this phase. The polling has already completed for 483 of 543 seats in the lower house of Parliament. The voting for the remaining 60 seats will be held on May 19 and the final results will be declared three days later. This general election is considered to be a litmus test for the right-wing ruling Baratiya Janata Party of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Opposition parties have formed state-wise coalitions to defeat Modi’s BJP party.
