US support for Yemen war

The US Senate has adopted a resolution to end the country’s military support for Saudi Arabia’s war against Yemen. Lawmakers in the 100-member chamber passed the document with 54 votes in favor and 46 against. The resolution requires the president to withdraw any US troops in or affecting Yemen within 30 days. The text now heads to the Democrat-led House of Representatives. Democratic Senator Bernie Sanders has called the Saudi war on Yemen a humanitarian and strategic disaster. President Donald Trump has threatened to veto the motion, claiming that the resolution would undermine the fight against extremism.

Dropping ‘occupied’ from Golan

The US State Department has changed its usual description of the Golan Heights from "Israeli-occupied" to "Israeli-controlled". The change in terminology has come in an annual global human rights report released on Wednesday. A separate section in the report, on the West Bank and the Gaza Strip also did not refer to those territories as being occupied or under occupation. Further, US Senator Lindsey Graham has said he will make efforts to make the government recognize the Golan Heights as part of Israel. Tel Aviv has also been lobbying US President Donald Trump to recognize its sovereignty over the territory. Israel occupied Syria’s Golan as well as the Palestinian territories of West Bank and Gaza Strip in 1967.

Idlib offensive

Russia says its warplanes have targeted a weapons depot belonging to al-Nusra Front terrorists in Syria’s northwestern province of Idlib. In a statement, the Russian defense ministry said the airstrikes destroyed a large number of drones. Moscow says terrorists planned to use the drones to attack a Russian airbase near the city of Latakia. Meanwhile, the Syrian army has intensified its attacks on the last pockets of terrorists in the town of al-Tamania, southeast of Idlib. Syrian forces have been conducting a mopping-up operation following the removal of terrorists during military operations last year.

US-China trade row

US President Donald Trump says he is in no rush to complete a trade pact with China. Trump insisted that any deal must include protection for intellectual property, a major sticking point between the two sides. He added, however, that there was a good chance a deal would be made. Remarks came weeks before Trump is expected to hold a summit with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping. China has not yet officially confirmed the meeting. But last month, the US president decided not to increase tariffs on Chinese goods as the representatives from the two sides were engaged in resolving trade disputes. However hurdles remain, with intellectual property being one of them. Washington accuses Beijing of forcing American companies to share their technology to local partners in order to do business in China. Beijing denies it engages in such practices.

Rejecting no-deal Brexit

The British parliament has approved an amendment to the Brexit deal that rules out the possibility of leaving the European Union without a deal. The House of Commons will hold another voting session on Thursday to decide whether to postpone the Brexit deadline of March 29. This comes as the European Union has reaffirmed that any request by Britain for a deadline extension must be supported by clear and reasonable justifications. Following the Wednesday vote, the British prime minister said the House of Commons should face up the consequences of its decision. Theresa May warned that the UK may experience a lengthy Brexit delay if the lawmakers fail to reach a consensus.

Condemning Saudi airstrike

Yemeni people have staged a rally in Sana’a to condemn a recent Saudi airstrike in the northern province of Hajjah. 10 women and 12 children were killed in Saudi Arabia's attack on Hajjah over the weekend. Dozens of people were also wounded in the strike. The United Nations as well as right organizations slammed Riyadh for carrying out the attacks. Saudi Arabia launched a deadly onslaught on Yemen in March 2015. The Saudi war has killed over 15,000 Yemenis and pushed 10 million others on the verge of famine.

Palestinian prisoners

The Israeli regime has issued the so-called administrative detention orders against dozens of Palestinians languishing in different Israeli jails. According to the Palestine Prisoner's Society, 24 out of the 38 orders are renewed, while the remaining 14 detainees received the administrative detention orders for the first time. The measures range from three to six months of prison. Tel Aviv has followed such polices for years, imprisoning Palestinians without trial or charge and has no time limit. According to a prisoners’ rights group, nearly 500 Palestinian inmates are currently being held under the administrative detention orders.
