US under fire for detaining Press TV anchor

Condemnations continue to pour in following the detention of Press TV’s anchor, Marzieh Hashemi, by US authorities. Here’s the latest comments about her detention.

US failure in Mideast

Iran’s top military commander says the United States spent seven thousand billion dollars in Iraq and Syria, but achieved nothing. Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces said the Islamic Republic achieved strategic and important gains in Iraq and Syria despite very low expenditure. Major General Mohammad Baqeri said these gains were made through wisdom, hard work and guidance. He noted that the Islamic Republic and the resistance front have succeeded in making major breakthroughs in the fight against Takfiri terrorism in the region. Baqeri said Daesh has been defeated in Syria and Iraq despite enemies’ efforts, and now the countries that created terror groups are standing in line to reopen their embassies in Syria and Iraq.

Israel attack on Syria

Syrian media say the country’s air defenses have repelled an Israeli aerial attack on the capital Damascus. The media said several missiles were intercepted and shot down. Press TV’s correspondent said the attack lasted for over an hour, and the explosions were the loudest in months. Reports said a military airport near Damascus were among the targets. Israel’s military said immediately after the attack that it has struck Iranian targets in Syria. Israel has been carrying similar attacks on Syria in the past several months.

Russia on Syrian response to Israeli raids

Russia says Syrian air defense has destroyed over 30 Israeli missiles and guided bombs during the latest attack on the Arab country. Russia’s Defense Ministry also said that at least four Syrian soldiers were killed and several others wounded in the offensive. Tel Aviv fired a barrage of missiles in early hours of Monday toward the capital Damascus. The Israeli military claimed the attack immediately, alleging that it had struck Iranian targets in Syria. Israel has been carrying similar attacks on Syria in the past several months.

Colombia protest

Thousands of Colombians have marched in the country’s main cities to reject terrorism and violence. The protest comes three days after a bombing at a Bogota police academy killed 21 people and left dozens more wounded. Colombia's leftist ELN rebels have claimed responsibility for the bombing. Colombian President Ivan Duque also took part in the march.
