Brazil-US military ties

Brazil says it is open to hosting a US military base in the future amid the country’s desire for deepening ties with Washington. Brazil's new far-right President Jair Bolsonaro says he wants to transform relations with the United States. On Wednesday, Bolsonaro told US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo that the two countries are now friends and share mutual concerns regarding a variety of issues. He said Brazil currently seeks closer economic ties with the US and that there can be military agreements between the two countries. Since being elected, Bolsonaro has pledged to move Brazil away from centrist and leftist politics that sought an independent path from Washington.

India temple tensions

A third woman has visited a holy shrine in India after two others entered the Hindu temple and sparked violent protests. Police say they are aware a 47-year-old worshipper entered the temple in India's southern state of Kerala. They say they are keeping a close eye on the situation, which they have described as tense. On Wednesday and Thursday, clashes between hardline devotees and riot police left one person dead and 15 others injured. Police say 750 people have been arrested. Last year, the Supreme Court overturned a ban on women of menstruating age from entering the temple. However, conservative Hindus have prevented them from doing so.

Khashoggi murder probe

The UN rights office says it can’t assess the fairness of a trial underway in Saudi Arabia over the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The office said the trial is not sufficient, calling for an independent investigation with international involvement. Saudi Arabia has put 11 suspects on trial in connection with Khashoggi’s murder. The Saudi attorney general has demanded the death penalty for five of the suspects. Turkey had demanded that the suspects be handed over for trial in the country, but Saudi Arabia refused the request. Riyadh has also asked Turkey for the evidence that Ankara collected while investigating the murder. Khashoggi was killed after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October. The CIA has concluded that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman was directly involved in the killing.

Brexit uncertainty

A new survey shows nearly 60 percent of the British premier’s party members are opposed to her divorce deal with the European Union. The YouGov survey shows Theresa May’s deal enjoys the support of only 38 percent of her party members. Also, 76 percent of those polled said warnings over a no-deal split are exaggerated or invented. The UK parliament will vote on the prime minister’s deal in the third week of this month. Without a parliamentary approval, the UK will either have to crash out of the EU without a deal or delay Brexit. May’s deal has been widely criticized by both allies and rivals.
