Zarif blames US's Middle East policies

The Iranian foreign minister has condemned the United States and Israel’s policies in the Middle East. Mohammad Javad Zarif was speaking in the Italian capital Rome. Zarif said he will also discuss the Iran nuclear agreement on the sidelines of the conference. Earlier this month, the US re-imposed sanctions against Tehran after withdrawing from nuclear deal unilaterally. Iran has repeatedly said the remaining signatories to the agreement have to offset the negative impact of the US sanctions if they want the Islamic Republic to remain in the deal.

Saudi succession row

Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister denies reports that members of the Saudi royal family want to prevent Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman from becoming the king. Adel al-Jubeir dismissed the reports as outrageous and unacceptable. He said Saudi Arabia is united around its leadership. Jubeir strongly denied that Riyadh and bin Salman were involved in the murder of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi. On Monday, sources close to the Saudi royal court said dozens of princes want to see a change in the line of succession. They claimed King Salman's younger brother, Prince Ahmed bin Abdulaziz, is favorable to become the next heir to the throne. Bin Salman is under pressure after the CIA accused him of having ordered Khashoggi's killing.

Famine in CAR

The United Nations has warned of food insecurity in the Central African Republic. Rochdi said if safe conditions for refugees to return to work on the fields are not in place soon, in a few years there will be famine in Central African Republic. Thousands have died and a fifth of CAR's 4.6 million population have fled their homes after a conflict broke out in the country in 2013. They include 620,000 internally displaced people and 570,000 refugees in neighboring countries.

US blaze toll

The death toll from two monstrous blazes in the US state of California has reached 86. In the north, the number of fatalities from the camp fire hit 83 with more than 560 people still missing. Three people also died in the other wildfire in the southern parts of the state, which according to authorities has been totally contained. Emergency teams continue the search and rescue operation despite the risk of mudslides due to heavy rain. Fire authorities said the rain makes the process of sifting through the ash and debris more difficult. The national weather service has warned about possible flash floods as a result of continuous showers until the weekend.

Deadly violence in Haiti

At least six people have been killed as violent protests continue for the fourth consecutive day in Haiti. The protesters were killed as a government car reportedly lost control and drove into a group of people. The general strike against President Jovenel Moise has caused severe disruption in the capital as schools, businesses and government buildings remain shot. The protesters are calling on Moise to resign for not investigating allegations of corruption in the previous government over a Venezuelan subsidized energy program. The corruption case also involves several ministers in the current ruling party.

Emirati crown prince sued for war crimes complicity

A France-based rights group files a lawsuit against visiting Emirati Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed for what it calls his complicity in torture and crimes in Yemen. Breham added bin Zayed is one of the main perpetrators of the deadly war on Yemen. The complaint cites a UN report that says torture was carried out in two centers in Yemen controlled by Emirati forces. Another lawsuit against Bin Zayed is brought by three Qatari nationals. The three say they had been detained and tortured by UAE security officials between 2013 and 2015. Bin Zayed is a close ally of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman. French prosecutors are already studying a complaint filed in April against bin Salman on similar grounds.

Yemen confab in Tehran

Iran is hosting an international conference on supporting the Yemeni people. Iran’s Basij force commander, Brigadier General Gholam-hossein Gheib-parvar made the opening remarks. He expressed sympathy with the oppressed Yemeni people and said Tehran stands with them. He also slammed Saudi Arabia for bombing Yemen and killing thousands of innocent civilians. The top commander said the attacks have destroyed the country’s infrastructure. He hailed Yemeni people’s resistance and stressed that it will lead to their victory.

Turkish official calls Trump's statement on Saudi Arabia ‘comic’

A Turkish official has accused the United States of trying to turn a blind eye to the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul. The deputy chairman of the ruling AK Party Numan Kurtulmus said the CIA definitely knows who ordered the killing of the journalist. The official also dismissed as “comic” recent remarks by the US president regarding the case. Trump on Tuesday vowed to remain a steadfast partner of Saudi Arabia, but at the same time said Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman may have known about the plan to murder Khashoggi. Since the killing of the journalist at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul last month, Turkey has repeatedly accused the Saudi government of ordering the murder.
