Saudi war on Yemen

Seven civilians, including women and children, have been killed in a fresh Saudi airstrike in Yemen’s central province of Bayda. The deaths occurred when Saudi Arabian fighter jets targeted a residential area in the town of Radman. Eight others were also wounded in the attack. Earlier in the day, two people lost their lives in a missile attack on the northern province of Sa’ada. Four others died in airstrikes on the southwestern province of Hudaydah. Nearly 15,000 people have been killed since Saudi Arabia started its deadly onslaught on Yemen in March 2015.

Syria elections

Vote counting is underway in Syria after the first local elections since 2011 when the country plunged into a deadly conflict. People from all walks of life cast their ballots to elect their municipal councils. As our correspondent Mohammad Ali reports, many hope the new councils will help speed up the reconstruction of Syria.

US Supreme Court nominee

New evidence has surfaced about the alleged sexual misconduct of US Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh back in the 1980s. A woman who had anonymously accused Kavanaugh decided to go public with her accusations. 51-year-old Christine Blasey Ford told the Washington Post that the encounter took place when a stumbling drunk Kavanaugh tried to impose himself on her. She says she was a high school student when the alleged incident happened in suburban Maryland. Kavanaugh had strongly denied the allegations. It comes at a time when the Senate Judiciary Committee is preparing to vote on Kavanaugh’s nomination by President Donald Trump to the country’s highest court to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy.

US-China trade war fallout

Asian markets drop following reports of US President Donald Trump’s plan to impose more tariffs on Chinese imports. Hong Kong had the biggest loss of 1.6 percent. Shanghai was 0.8 percent lower while Seoul and Singapore each lost 0.7 percent. Trades were in a positive mood late last week after the US Treasury Secretary proposed talks with the Chinese side to avert an all-out trade war but the offer was not materialized. Trump has reportedly decided to impose ten percent levies on two hundred billion dollars worth of Chinese imports. Beijing has pledged to retaliate.

PLO slams US

The Palestinian Liberation Organization slams the US for revoking visas for its envoy to Washington as tensions continues to simmer between the two sides. Ashrawi added that the United States has taken its attempts to pressure and blackmail the Palestinians to a new level. On Sunday, Ambassador Husam Zomlot said his family including his two young children had their visas valid until 2020. He added that they left the US after being informed their permits would expire when the diplomatic office is closed next month. Last Monday, the US shut down the PLO office in Washington DC as part of an effort to block cases against Israel at the International Criminal Court.

Typhoon Mangkhut in Hong Kong

Clean-up operations are underway in Hong Kong, after super typhoon Mangkhut battered the financial hub at the weekend. Authorities are busy clearing roads and streets of debris including toppled trees. Schools remained closed on Monday, but stock and financial markets opened as normal. Flights were slowly resumed, while some other transport services remained suspended. Authorities in Hong Kong say Mangkhut has injured more than three hundred people, and left severe and extensive damage. The super typhoon hit Hong Kong after it battered the northern tip of the Philippines. From Hong Kong, it headed to China, making landfall in the south. Chinese media say four people have been killed and thousands more evacuated because of the strong typhoon.
