Iran Europe call

Iran has warned it might increase uranium enrichment if the European Union continues to act passively following the US withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal. Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has urged the EU and the other signatories to the deal to act in order to compensate for the US pullout. Zarif says the EU should stand up against the US that wants the bloc to violate international law regarding the deal. Washington dropped out of the deal in May and restored sanctions on Iran afterward. It has threatened to impose a second wave of sanctions targeting Iran’s oil exports and banking system in November. Zarif says Iran might respond with decreasing its level of commitment to the deal if the second set of sanction comes into force, disrupting what he calls the balance of give and take.

US North Korea pressure tactic

The United States is convening a multinational coalition to better track ships supplying fuel to North Korea, in violation of UN sanctions, a leading American daily reports. The Wall Street Journal reported US military officials as saying that seven countries will join the coalition namely Australia, the UK, Canada, New Zealand, France, South Korea, and Japan. They will send vessels and jets to hunt ships supplying fuel to North Korea, in violation of sanctions on oil exports to the country. The American daily said, the coalition will be created in line with President Donald Trump’s policy of maximum pressure on North Korea. Trump has adopted the policy despite his June agreement with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on Pyongyang’s denuclearization. North Korea is critical of the US pressures. It says they come despite measures Pyongyang has taken to show its good will.

Incumbent Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has also announced that he is not seeking to serve a second term in office. In the last sessions, no vote was held on the appointment of the speaker and two deputies. That after the competing political alliances claimed to hold a majority in the assembly.
