US Syria warning

The United States has threatened the Syrian government with a strong response in case of a chemical attack on the terrorist-held region of Idlib. Bolton added the US is in agreement with Britain and France over the issue. US officials have accused Damascus of planning a chemical attack on Idlib as the Syrian army and its allied forces prepare for a final assault to purge terrorists. Russia, however, has warned Washington against any aggression toward Syria, accusing insurgents of planning a false-flag chemical attack to justify a Western strike. Damascus has also emphasized the possible staged assault on civilians will be used to blame the Syrian government.

Israeli aggression in Gaza

Israeli forces injure dozens of Palestinians in Gaza who were supporting boats that were attempting to break the regime’s naval blockade.

Looming hurricane in US

Hurricane Florence bears on the eastern United States, forcing authorities to order large-scale evacuations. South Carolina has told an estimated one million people to evacuate the coastal areas. Another quarter million residents in North Carolina have been ordered to leave their homes. Virginia and Maryland have declared states of emergency. According to the National Hurricane Center, the storm contains maximum sustained winds of 220 kilometers per hour and will strengthen further as it moves closer to the mainland. The category-four hurricane is predicted to make landfall in the Carolinas early Thursday.

Anger at US aid cut

Palestinian protesters take to the streets of the occupied West Bank. Their rally condemns the United States’ decision to freeze funding to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees. The demonstrators waved flags and held banners against Washington’s policies and support for Israel. The US move to cut UNRWA funding drew a firestorm of rebukes and condemnations from the United Nations, the European Union as well as the Arab league. Israel has, however, praised the decision, describing it as a realistic view of the situation that supports Tel Aviv’s position. UNRWA provides aid to registered Palestinian refugees forced out of their land by Israeli occupation forces.

Myanmar atrocities

The new UN human rights chief has called for a new body to collect evidence of crimes against Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar in order to expedite fair and independent trials. Bachelet made the remarks in her first speech to the Human Rights Council in Geneva. She urged the council to refer the matter to the UN General Assembly so that the mechanism can be established. Bachelet also hailed the international criminal court’s finding and its decision that it has jurisdiction over the deportation of the Rohingya. She called it an immensely important step toward ending impunity and addressing the suffering of the Rohingya. Last week, the ICC said the deportations of the Rohingya from Myanmar to Bangledesh were a possible crime against humanity. In August, UN investigators said Myanmar's military committed crimes against the Rohingya with genocidal intent.

Africa child poverty

The United Nations Children’s Fund has called on African governments to take action to end child poverty in the continent. UNICEF says currently two thirds of children in sub-Saharan Africa are living without access to basics. Our correspondent Daniel Arapmoi has filed this report from Uganda’s Capital Kampala.

Israeli demolition plan

Palestinian activists have set up several makeshift homes next to a Palestinian Bedouin encampment that has been slated for demolition by Israeli authorities. Activists gathered overnight and constructed the houses using metal sheets. They said they built them in response to the Israeli occupation and the recent decision by the Israeli court to demolish Khan al-Ahmar near East Jerusalem al-Quds. Critics say its removal is meant to make room for an Israeli settlement. On Monday major European countries issued a rare joint statement warning Israel against its planned demolition of the Bedouin encampment. France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom said its strategic location is important for a future Palestinian state. Israeli authorities regularly carry out demolitions of Palestinian Bedouins' homes, claiming that they have been built illegally.

Russia military drills

Russia kicks off its largest-ever military drills since the fall of the Soviet Union in the country’s far East. Russian military officials say at least 300,000 troops, 36,000 vehicles and one thousand aircraft take part in the exercises called Vostok 2018. The drills will last until September 17, with the participation of Chinese and Mongolian troops. NATO has condemned the maneuvers, calling them a rehearsal for large-scale conflict. The West accuses Russia of interfering in western affairs and ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Syria.

UK slavery

An anti-slavery monitor has sharply criticized the UK government for what it calls London's failure to address the issue. The Anti-Trafficking Monitoring Group says Britain has failed to protect thousands of children from being trafficked and enslaved. The group, which is a coalition of charity organizations, has accused the government of lacking a clear plan to prevent child trafficking in the UK. Government figures show the number of children suspected to have been trafficked hit an all-time record last year. Over 2100 kids were trafficked with a majority of them trapped in sexual exploitation and forced labor. An Australian human rights group estimates that Britain is home to at least 136,000 modern-day slaves.
