Israeli restrictions on Palestinians

Jews around the world are celebrating Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. The Israeli regime has seized the opportunity to further tighten restrictions on Palestinians especially in the Gaza Strip. Press TV’s correspondent Ashraf Shannon has more details in the following report from Gaza:

Saudi fatalities

Yemeni media say the Ansarullah fighters have killed at least 53 Saudi soldiers in August alone during retaliatory attacks in response to the Kingdom’s bloody war. Al-Masirah TV said 23 Saudi soldiers also sustained injuries last month. The news channel also said the Houthis have killed at least 425 Saudi soldiers and injured 270 others over the past eight months. Yemenis say they will continue their retaliatory measures until Riyadh stops its aggression against their country. The relentless Saudi war on its neighbor has claimed the lives of nearly 15,000 Yemeni people, many of them women and children.

Sweden far-right surge

Near final results show Sweden's nationalist anti-immigration party making gains in the country's general elections. The results suggested that the Sweden Democrats, a party with white supremacist roots, has about 18 percent, around 5 percent higher than the previous vote. The party’s leader said the group will gain huge influence over Swedish politics after its good performance in the elections. The results also indicated that the ruling center-left Social Democrats and the opposition center-right Alliance have each won a little more than 40 percent. With no party securing a majority, the Sweden Democrats can play a key role in talks over forming a government.

Iran nuclear program

Iran says it has set up and completed an advanced hall for the construction of modern centrifuges. Iran’s nuclear chief added that Tehran has started developing nuclear-powered vessels within the limits of the 2015 nuclear deal. Ali Akbar Salehi said this project will take 10 to 15 years to complete. He also noted that Tehran might suspend some of the limitations on the volume and level of enrichment in reaction to Washington’s withdrawal from the nuclear accord. Salehi said a final scenario can be a complete exit from the deal. However, he expressed hope that this will not happen with the help of the remaining signatories to the agreement.

Gaza health crisis

The Palestinian health ministry says hospitals in the Gaza Strip may close within days amid Israel’s crippling blockade of the coastal enclave. Ministry Spokesman, Ashraf al-Qedra, said power generators of major hospitals in Gaza will stop because of fuel shortages. The possible closure of hospitals will deprive hundreds of thousands of people of service and health care. Gaza needs nearly 500 megawatts of electricity per day, but it only receives less than half of that amount. As a result, residents of the coastal enclave have access to electricity only a few hours a day. The Gaza Strip has been under an Israeli siege since June 2007.

Chile coup anniversary clashes

Chile’s capital has been the scene of violent clashes between police and protesters during a rally marking the anniversary of the 1973 coup. Clashes erupted at Santiago’s General Cemetery where thousands were attending a memorial for the victims of years of dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet. Police used water cannon and tear gas to disperse the protesters. In return, the demonstrators threw rocks, Molotov cocktails and bottles at the police. Several people were injured and many more got arrested. This was a familiar scene for Chileans as the coup anniversary often turns ugly. The 1973 coup in the South American nation resulted in death of the then-President Salvador Allende and had started Pinochet’s dictatorship.
