Ex-Trump campaign adviser conspired with Russia: FBI
Newly-released documents by the Federal Bureau of Investigation suggest that former Trump presidential campaign adviser Carter Page collaborated and conspired with Russia prior to the 2016 US election.
On Saturday, the FBI released the documents related to the surveillance of Page as part of a probe into whether he and the Russian government plotted to undercut the election.
The 412 pages, mostly heavily redacted, included surveillance applications to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court and warrants surrounding the investigation into Page.
“The FBI believes that Page has been collaborating and conspiring with the Russian Government,” the surveillance application filed in October 2016 said.
The documents also include applications and renewal warrants lodged in 2017 after Donald Trump took office.
Page has so far denied the allegations and has not been charged with any crime.
Earlier Saturday, the New York Times said it had received a copy from the Justice Department after it and other news organizations had filed a lawsuit.
According to the documents, “the FBI believes that the Russian Government’s efforts are being coordinated with Page and perhaps other individuals associated with” Trump’s campaign.
Page “has established relationships with Russian Government officials, including Russian intelligence officers,” it added.
Meanwhile, Republicans lawmakers have argued that the FBI made serious missteps when it decided to seek a warrant in order to monitor Page in October 2016 shortly after he quit the Trump campaign.
House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, however, said on Saturday that the documents provide “clear evidence” of the coordination between Page and Russia “to undermine and improperly and illegally influence the 2016 US presidential election.”
Trump and the key members of his team have been under investigation for allegedly "colluding" with Moscow during the campaign.
Russia has time and again denied the allegations on interfering in other countries’ democratic process, dismissing them as part of a “Russophobia” campaign run by the West.
