US President Trump is encouraging Republican Party lawmakers and “real Americans” to start “getting tough” on the US government’s investigation over alleged ties between his election campaign and Russia, calling the federal probe a “scam.”

Trump took to Twitter again on Sunday, attacking the credibility of the US Justice Department’s Special Counsel Robert Mueller who is leading the Russia investigation.

“Now that the Witch Hunt has given up on Russia and is looking at the rest of the World, they should easily be able to take it into the Mid-Term Elections where they can put some hurt on the Republican Party,” Trump tweeted.

“Republicans and real Americans should start getting tough on this Scam,” Trump said in another tweet.

The investigation, which is aimed at determining possible “collusion” between the 2016 Trump presidential campaign and Russian government elements,  is now more than a year old.

Trump has vented his frustration with the probe over the recent weeks and appears increasingly eager to conclude it.

The probe has already overshadowed his political agenda and expected re-election bid in 2020.

"At what point does this soon to be $20,000,000 Witch Hunt, composed of 13 Angry and Heavily Conflicted Democrats and two people who have worked for Obama for 8 years, STOP! They have found no Collussion [sic] with Russia, No Obstruction, but they aren’t looking at the corruption,” Trump wrote in another tweet.

He also listed a number of allegations against former secretary of state Hillary Clinton and other democrats, including the potential misuse of the FISA court, the so-called dossier on Trump and the 33,000 missing emails that Clinton never handed in during an FBI probe into her email habits.

Trump has stressed the need for Republicans to maintain their majority in the House of Representatives in the upcoming midterm elections becasue otherwise he would face impeachment from Democrats.

Many Democrats have indicated that firing Mueller is their "red line" for impeachment.
