Israel West Bank killing

Israeli forces have killed a Palestinian man over an alleged car ramming attack in the occupied West Bank. The incident happened in the city of al-Khalil, also known as Hebron. In a statement, the Israeli army claimed the Palestinian man was attempting to run over soldiers with his car. The statement did not mention any injuries to soldiers at the site. The Israeli forces have killed a number of Palestinians labeling similar accusations over the past years. They have also killed at least 127 people in the besieged Gaza Strip since the Great March of Return rallies began there on March 30th this year. Daily demonstrations have been held in both Gaza and the West Bank since then.

US Syria airstrikes

At least 12 civilians are killed in US-led attacks on Daesh terrorists in northeastern Syria. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the incident happened when a militant-held village in the province of Hasakah was targeted by airstrikes and artillery fire. Those killed, including women and their children, were reportedly members of the same family. The UK-based watchdog says the deaths bring to at least 20 the number of civilians killed by the US coalition in 24 hours. The other eight were killed in US-led strikes in Dayr al-Zawr province, south of Hasakeh. So far, many civilians have been killed in the US-led raids allegedly conducted to hit terrorist positions in Syria.

Spain’s new PM sworn in

In Spain, socialist leader Pedro Sanchez swears in as country’s new Prime Minister. Sanchez, who has no government experience, took the oath of office before Spain’s king in Madrid. He was elected as the new premier after Spain’s parliament voted to oust Mariano Rajoy in a historic no-confidence motion. Rajoy was accused of failing to take responsibility for his party’s scandal that includes money laundering and tax crimes. After winning the absolute majority in parliament, Sanchez promised to fight inequality and transform and modernize Spain.

‘US must leave Syria’

The Syrian government says US forces must withdraw from the country. Walid al-Muallem made the remarks at a press briefing in the Syrian capital Damascus. He was referring to al-Tanf region in southern Homs province, where the Pentagon has a military base. Muallem also touched on the Iranian advisory mission in Syria, saying Tehran has no military bases in his country. He added that Iranian advisors and experts are in Syria at the invitation of the Syrian government and they coordinate their activities with Damascus.

Catalonia independence

Catalonia’s new government has taken the oath of office, with a pledge to pursue the bid for independence from Spain. Torra called on the new Spanish Prime Minister for talks to resolve conflicts in a civilized way. The Catalan president also urged the socialist Pedro Sanchez to take risks in addressing the issue of Catalonia. The region’s 13 new councilors were sworn in during an official ceremony in Barcelona. Emotional contributions were also made to the region’s leader in exile, Carles Puigdemont, and other jailed pro-independence figures. Political tensions escalated in Spain after an independence referendum failed in Catalonia last October.

South China Sea tensions

The United States has once again accused China of militarizing the South China Sea to intimidate and coerce neighbors. The Pentagon chief said Washington will compete vigorously with China’s actions if needed. The remarks come amid growing discord between China and the US over the disputed waters and islands. Last week, two US Navy warships reportedly sailed near South China Sea islands over which China has territorial disputes with its neighboring countries. Beijing has dismissed the US official’s claims of militarization. It says military activities on the islands have been for self-defense purposes. Beijing has repeatedly warned the United States against sending warships to patrol the South China Sea.
