Federal authorities have monitored the phone lines of US President Donald Trump's personal lawyer Michael Cohen, and have spotted at least one call between a Cohen line and the White House.

According to a NBC Thursday report, Federal investigators kept logs of the phone lines of Trump’s personal lawyer Michael Cohen. NBC corrected an earlier story that said the lines were wiretapped to allow investigators to hear the calls.

Three senior US officials disputed the initial story saying that the monitoring of Cohen’s phones was limited to a log of calls, known as a pen register, not a wiretap where investigators can actually listen to calls.

It is not clear how long the monitoring of phone calls has been authorized, but NBC News said it learned that it was in place in the weeks leading up to the April 9 raids on Cohen's office, hotel room and home.

Cohen is under criminal investigation by prosecutors from the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York for issues that include his business dealings.

FBI raid of Cohen’s office

Back in April, The FBI raided the office of Cohen, seizing documents about a host of issues, including a 2016 payment he made to porn-star Stormy Daniels to keep her quiet about allegations that she had a sexual encounter with Trump.

Cohen has been at the center of a controversy surrounding a $130,000 payment to porn star Stormy Daniels, who has alleged that she had sex with Trump in 2006 and was paid money shortly before the 2016 election to keep quiet about the affair.

However, Cohen has said that "these rumors have circulated time and again since 2011," adding, "President Trump once again vehemently denies any such occurrence as has Ms. Daniels."

Cohen's attorney, has called the searches "completely inappropriate and unnecessary," saying, they "resulted in the unnecessary seizure of protected attorney client communications between a lawyer and his client."

However, prosecutors have said “the searches were authorized by a federal magistrate judge, who had found probable cause to believe that the premises and devices searched contained evidence, fruits, and instrumentalities of conduct for which Cohen is under criminal investigation.”
