WH quiet on speculations that Trump will pardon lawyer after FBI raid

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders declines to clearly comment on speculations that US President Donald Trump might pardon his personal attorney Michael Cohen.

“It’s hard to close a door on something that hasn’t taken place. I don’t like to discuss or comment on hypothetical situations that may or may not ever happen,” Sanders said during a Monday press briefing.

She referred further questions on Cohen’s case to his and Trump’s personal attorneys. She later added that Trump has "been clear that he hasn't done anything wrong."

Trump on Saturday attacked The New York Times for a report that the president's legal team is bracing for Cohen to cooperate with investigators and turn on Trump.

The president praised Cohen as a "fine person" and denied that he would "flip."

FBI raid on Cohen’s office

Two weeks ago the FBI raided the office of Cohen, seizing documents about a host of issues, including a 2016 payment he made to porn-star Stormy Daniels to keep her quiet about allegations that she had a sexual encounter with Trump.

Cohen has been at the center of a controversy surrounding a $130,000 payment to porn star Stormy Daniels, who has alleged that she had sex with Trump in 2006 and was paid money shortly before the 2016 election to keep quiet about the affair.

However, Cohen has said that "these rumors have circulated time and again since 2011," adding, "President Trump once again vehemently denies any such occurrence as has Ms. Daniels."

Trump reacted to the FBI raid calling it a "disgraceful situation."

"Just heard they broke into the office of one of my personal attorneys, a good man. It's a disgraceful situation. It's a total witch hunt.”
