Iranian cyclist Sohrabi pockets bronze at 2018 Asian championships

Iranian professional racing cyclist Mehdi Sohrabi has managed to take a bronze at the 2018 Asian Road and Para Cycling Championships in Myanmar, and raised the Islamic Republic’s medal tally to four at the conclusion of the continental event.

On Monday, the 36-year-old Iranian sportsman took part in the elite men's road race competitions, and completed the 176-kilometer (109-mile) task for a third-place finish, the Cycling Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran website reported.

Earlier, Mohammad Ganjkhanlou finished second in the men’s road race, and got the silver medal.

A cyclist from Japan stood atop the podium, and a Mongolian contestant scooped the bronze.

Moreover, Iranian cyclist Arvin Moaz’zami Goudarzi competed against his rivals in the men’s road race individual time trial on Saturday, and completed the 42-kilometer (26.1-mile) race in 50:52 to sit in the third place.

Hong Kong’s Cheung King-lok snatched the gold medal after he finished the line in 49 minutes and 53 seconds – three seconds ahead of old rival Choe Hyeong-min of South Korea.

The Iranian cycling team also came second in the men’s elite team time trial, and stood behind Japan. Hong Kong occupied the third spot.

Mehdi Sohrabi, Arvin Moaz’zami Goudarzi, Behnam Ariyan, Mir Samad Pourseyyedi, Mohammad Rajablou and Mohammad-Esmaeil Chaichi were members of the Iran team.

The 2018 Asian Road and Para Cycling Championships kicked off in Myanmar’s capital city of Nay Pyi Taw on February 6, and concluded on February 12, 2018.

The tournament brought together dozens of male and female cyclists from various Asian countries, including Hong Kong, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Japan, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, the Philippines and South Korea.
