Iran strikes five medals at Asian Indoor Athletics Championships

Iranian sportsmen and sportswomen have presented sparkling performances at the eighth edition of the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in Iran, and collected five medals, including two gold ones, at the multinational and multi-sport event.

On Thursday and the opening day of the tournament at Aftab-e Enghelab Sport Complex in the Iranian capital city of Tehran, Iranian high jumper Sepideh Tavakoli got a silver medal by registering 1.80 meters in the women’s final contest.

Nadiya Dusanova from Uzbekistan struck the yellow metal of the same heat with 1.87 meters.

Kazakhstan’s Nadezhda Dubovitskaya settled for the bronze medal, having recorded 1.80 meters.

Later in the day, Hossein Kayhani participated in the men’s 3,000-meter race contests, and finished in the first place to collect the gold medal.

Qatari contestant Yaser Salem Bagharab pocketed the silver medal, and Homayoun Hemmati, also from the Islamic Republic of Iran, ranked third.

Additionally, Hassan Taftian won the title in the men’s 60-meter running contests. The 24-year-old Iranian sprinter clocked 6.71 seconds at the men’s final and stood on top of the podium.

Omani sprint athlete Barakat Mubarak al-Harthi and Femi Seun Ogunode from Qatar registered 6.74 and 6.75 seconds respectively to land in the second and third places.

Moreover, Qatari track and field athlete Mutaz Essa Barshim took the top honor in the men’s high jump, and won the gold medal by registering a brilliant leap of 2.38 meters.

Iranian high jumper Kayvan Ghanbarzadeh set 2.15 meters and claimed the silver.

The bronze medal went to Hamdi Amin, also from Qatar, who leapt 2.15 meters.

The eighth edition of the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships started on February 1, and will finish on February 3, 2018.

The tournament has reportedly brought together 360 male and female athletes from 22 countries, including China, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
