Here is a brief look at Press TV newsroom's headlines from 18:00 GMT, November 21, 2017 to 08:00 GMT, November 22, 2017.

Leader's warning

Leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has hailed the fall of the last bastion of Daesh Takfiri terrorists as a great service not only to regional countries and the Muslim World but also to all humanity. The Leader also warned that the enemy’s deceit should not be overlooked and said those who made huge investment to create the Daesh terrorist group would try to re-hatch their evil plots in another part of the region or in other forms.

Hariri back in Lebanon

The Lebanese prime minister has arrived in the capital Beirut after weeks of absence. Sa’ad al-Hariri departed from Cairo earlier in the evening on Tuesday, after talks with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. He also made a brief stop in Cyprus on his way to Beirut. The Lebanese premier earlier said he would elaborate on his reasons for resignation when he reaches Lebanon. Hariri’s surprise resignation which was announced in a speech from Saudi Arabia over two weeks ago sparked political uncertainty in Lebanon.

Pakistan politics

The National Assembly of Pakistan has rejected a proposed law by the opposition parties to remove former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif from the ruling Muslim League leadership. The bill did not win enough support due to a not vote cast by Sharif’s fellow party members who are still backing him despite losing the premiership in July this year.

Lebanon politics

The Lebanese president has warned Arab countries that they need to deal with Beirut wisely and rationally, otherwise the country would be pushed “toward the fire”. Addressing the Lebanese people on the eve of the country’s Independence Day, Michel Aoun added that the recent crisis triggered by Hariri’s resignation had been averted but it was not a trivial issue. Aoun’s warning comes after Saudi Arabia and its Arab allies accused Hezbollah and Iran of interference in regional affairs and spreading terrorism in the Middle East. Both Hezbollah and Iran have time and again rejected the accusations as baseless.

Zimbabwe presidency

Robert Mugabe has stepped down as the president of Zimbabwe, ending his 37-year rule before being impeached by parliament. 93-year-old Mugabe said in his resignation letter that the decision was a voluntary move aimed at a smooth transfer of power in Zimbabwe. The announcement sparked mass street celebrations by his opponents. Meanwhile, a spokesman for the ruling party has announced that Mugabe’s sacked vice president, Emmerson Mnangagwa, will return in a day and may be sworn in as interim president. The developments come after Mugabe was pressured by the military and his own party to hand over power.

Syria’s future

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani says Syria’s future should be determined by its own people not by foreign powers. Rouhani made the comment before leaving Tehran for the Russian Black Sea resort city of Sochi where he is set to hold talks with his Russian and Turkish counterparts on Syria. Rouhani said Syria’s independence and territorial integrity is of critical importance and that Iran is against any effort to partition the country. He noted that Iran seeks to promote stability in the Middle East, accusing the US, Israel and their regional allies of attempting to destabilize the region. The Iranian president stressed that Tehran will not rest until it completely eliminate terrorism in the region.

Daesh and its backers

A senior Iranian official says the Daesh terrorist group would have been uprooted earlier if the West hadn’t supported the Takfiri group. He said there are videos showing that fighter jets belonging to the countries which claim to be fighting terrorists deliberately refuse to strike Daesh positions. He said Daesh terrorists would turn into a security threat despite being physically removed from Syria, Iraq and Lebanon. He urged security agencies of regional countries to remain vigilant against possible acts of terror by Daesh elements in the future.

Deadly US strike in Somalia

In Somalia, a US airstrike has killed over 100 people that Washington claims were members of the al-Shabab militant group. According to Somalia’s state news agency, the attack was carried out 125 kilometers northwest of the capital, Mogadishu. Pentagon claims the raid was done in coordination with Somalia’s federal government. The al-Qaeda-linked group has denied the attack. There have been 29 US strikes confirmed by the Pentagon so far this year in Somalia. Rights groups have continually expressed concern that such attacks would increase casualties among civilians in the African country.
