End of Daesh

A senior commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps has congratulated Iran’s Leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, on the victory over the Daesh terrorist group. In a letter, commander of the IRGC’s Quds Force, Major General Qassem Soleimani, said Daesh was a dangerous group created to trigger tension across the Islamic world and pit Muslims against one another. The top commander said the Takfiri group created a very dangerous crisis in Iraq and Syria at the outset and captured hundreds of thousands of square kilometers of the two countries. However, he said, the guidelines of the Leader along with the resistance of Iraqi and Syrian governments as well as the braveries of the two countries’ forces sounded the death knell for the Daesh terrorist group. Iran has offered military consultations to Baghdad and Damascus at their own request to help fight the terrorists.

Assad-Putin meeting

Russian President, Vladimir Putin, says Syria is close to finishing the fight against terrorism in the war-torn country. In a meeting with his Syrian counterpart in the Russian city of Sochi on Monday, Putin congratulated Bashar al-Assad for his army’s achievements in fighting terrorism. He also called for a peaceful political settlement in Syria after fully defeating terrorism. The two sides also discussed holding the Syrian congress. The Syrian president, in turn, thanked Putin for his support of Damascus both by military and political means. Bashar al-Assad said his country still needs Russia’s support to ensure that no other countries can interfere in intra-Syrian peace talks.

Iran slamming Arab League

Iran’s president has questioned the role of the Arab League in the regional crises. Hassan Rouhani slammed the organization for its inaction in the fight against terrorism. Rouhani accused the Arab League of turning a blind eye to the ongoing Israeli aggression against the Palestinians. The Iranian president also congratulated victories against Daesh Takfiri terrorists in Syria and Iraq. He expressed gratitude towards parties involved in the Astana talks who are trying to find a political solution to the Syrian crisis.

Lebanon-Israel tension

The Lebanese army chief has ordered its troops to be fully prepared at the country’s southern border. General Joseph Aoun called on soldiers to remain on the watch to face the threats of the Israeli enemy and its violations. He urged army forces to be vigilant for the proper implementation of UN resolution 1701 to preserve stability at the southern border. Earlier, Beirut cautioned Tel Aviv against waging a war on Lebanon, saying the country is confident that it will emerge victorious in a possible battle.

Impeaching Mugabe

Over a dozen ministers have refused to take part in a cabinet meeting called by President Robert Mugabe amid a simmering political crisis in Zimbabwe. The meeting failed to take off after only five ministers and the attorney general showed up. 17 other cabinet members opted to attend a meeting to plan the president's impeachment. Mugabe’s own ruling Zanu-PF party is holding the proceedings against the embattled leader for allegedly allowing his wife to seize government powers. The party has also reached out to the main opposition MDC for cooperation in receiving enough parliamentary votes for the act. Meanwhile protesters gathered outside the parliament to force the 93-year-old president to step down. Mugabe has defied calls for resignation remaining under house arrest since last week’s military takeover.

Mugabe quits

Robert Mugabe has stepped down as the president of Zimbabwe after nearly four decades in office. The decision by the 93-year-old president was announced while impeachment proceedings were underway in parliament. In a resignation letter submitted to the parliament, Mugabe underlined that his decision was made voluntarily. He noted that the decision aimed to provide for smooth transfer of power in Zimbabwe. Wild jubilation broke out among the lawmakers when the announcement was made by the House speaker. The resignation follows days of political turmoil in the African country with the military keeping the president under house arrest. Mugabe was under pressure by both his own Zanu-PF ruling party and the public to resign.
