Battle for Mosul

The all-out offensive to liberate the areas still controlled by Daesh Takfiri terrorists is underway in the Iraqi city of Mosul. In their latest achievements, the Iraqi army backed by the popular mobilization forces managed to retake Al-Saha and half of Al-Zinjili neighborhoods in west Mosul. The two districts have been among the main targets since an offensive aimed at liberating them began last week. The latest advances have reduced the grip of Daesh on Mosul to the Old City and several nearby areas. According to the Iraqi army however, the operation has slowed down because of the existence of narrow streets and the presence of civilians in the battle zone. The massive operation to liberate Mosul started more than seven months ago.

Kabul rally

Afghans rally on the second day of demonstrations that left several protesters dead in the capital Kabul on Friday. Demonstrators set up tents and blocked the streets leading to the presidential palace. They held signs and chanted anti-government slogans. On Friday, over a thousand protesters rallied to call for the resignation of President Ashraf Ghani following Wednesday’s deadly bomb attack that left at least 90 people dead and nearly 500 injured. Afghan security forces opened fire on the protesters and killed several of them. They also used tear gas and water cannon to disperse the protesters. The ralliers argue that their leaders are not capable of leading the country following months of instability across the nation.

Trump facing opposition

US President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris climate accord faces stiff opposition from American authorities and firms. At least two Republican governors have announced that they will join Democratic-run states to combat climate change. Around 150 mayors, who say they represent 47 million Americans, have also vowed to uphold the terms of the Paris accord. Meanwhile, US billionaire and UN envoy for climate change Michael Bloomberg has promised to allocate fifteen million dollars to support the agreement. Scores of university presidents and businesses are also standing against Trump’s decision which has been met with criticism worldwide.

Kabul deadly blasts

At least twelve people have been killed after multiple explosions ripped through the Afghan capital Kabul during the funeral of a protester. He lost his life in Friday’s anti-government demonstrations. Many others were also wounded. No further information has been released about the incident. The explosions come a day after deadly protests in the capital calling for the resignation of President Ashraf Ghani over Wednesday’s deadly blast that killed at least 90 people. Several people were killed when Afghan security forces opened fire on the protesters. Angry demonstrators argued that their leaders are not capable of leading the country following months of instability across the nation.

US Syria strikes

Dozens of people, including women and children, have been killed in the latest US airstrikes in northern Syria. At least 43 people were killed after US aircraft hit Jamili Building in Raqqah city. The six-floor building was destroyed in the bombing. The provincial capital has been repeatedly targeted by the US-led coalition, with an alleged aim of curbing Daesh terrorists. The Pentagon has confirmed 484 civilians have been killed by US-led airstrikes in Syria and Iraq since 2014. It says the total civilian death toll has increased by more than one third in a month. Defense Secretary James Mattis claims the attacks on civilians are unintentional and a fact of life in such situations.

Britain arrests

British police have made yet another arrest in connection with last month’s deadly terrorist attack in the city of Manchester. Authorities have arrested a 24-year-old man in Manchester’s Rusholme area. That brings to eleven the number of suspects in custody over the attack that was claimed by the Daesh terror group. Seventeen arrests have been made so far and six people have since been released without charge. British-born Salman Abedi allegedly detonated a sophisticated device at a concert venue of American singer, Ariana Grande on May 22. The attack killed 22 people, including seven children and injured scores more. The singer has returned to the UK for an event to raise funds for the victims and their families.

Aleppo gains

Syrian forces battling Daesh terrorists have made fresh gains in Aleppo province. In their latest push, the Syrian army liberated 22 Daesh-held villages and farms while pushing toward Maskaneh, the last Daesh-held town in Aleppo. The seizure of Maskaneh would bring the Syrian forces to the border of Raqqah province, where US backed forces are operating. The Syrian army and its allies have also seized a mountainous territory in the region. The army says it has taken control of the northeastern and central parts of a mountain range to the east of Khanasser-Ithriya. Retaking the area will help secure a key road that links Aleppo to the Syrian capital, Damascus.
