‘Remove US missiles’

Controversy over US missile deployment in Southeast Asia is raging on with China once again calling for the immediate removal of the system from South Korea. China's Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Chunying Hua expressed grave concerns over reports that the new THAAD missile launchers were secretly brought into South Korea without approval from Seoul. She went on saying that the deployment would severely damage China's security interests and undermine the region’s strategic balance. The US missile system deployment in South Korean has turned into a bone of contention between Washington and the new government in Seoul.

Palestinian woman injured

Israeli soldiers have shot and critically wounded a Palestinian woman over an alleged stabbing attempt in the occupied West Bank. The Israeli military says the woman was shot after she attacked a soldier with a knife near a settlement, southwest of Jenin. The soldier was reportedly taken to hospital with a stab wound to his upper body. The assailant is said to be in critical condition. Israeli forces have killed scores of Palestinians in recent months for allegedly trying to run over or stab Israelis. At least 292 Palestinians have been killed in a wave of unrest that broke out in October 20-15. The violence erupted after Israeli forces and settlers stormed the al-Aqsa Mosque compound and restricted Palestinians' access to the holy site.

Mosul mass grave

Iraqi authorities have discovered another mass grave in Mosul that contains the remains of 60 civilians including women and the elderly. The officials say the grave was found in western Mosul. They also say the victims were executed by Daesh terrorists and that they suffered gunshot wounds to the head. The area has been the scene of fighting between Iraqi troops and Daesh terrorists. Iraq’s army and volunteer forces launched an offensive last year in a bid to drive the Takfiri group out of Mosul, the terrorists’ last major stronghold in Iraq. Since then, several mass graves have been found in areas formerly held by Daesh.

Kashmir tensions

At least three people have been killed in cross-border clashes between Indian and Pakistani troops in the disputed region of Kashmir. The two sides engaged in fighting along the heavily-militarized border, known as the Line of Control that divides the Muslim-majority Himalayan region. Pakistani officials said shelling by Indian forces killed two civilians and wounded six others in Pakistani-administered Kashmir. The Indian army also said one person was killed and one wounded on its side of Kashmir. India and Pakistan blame each other for triggering the violence. Kashmir has been divided between the two adversaries since they gained independence from Britain in 1947. Both sides claim Kashmir in its entirety.

Climate deal challenge

China and the EU have reaffirmed their commitment to the Paris climate accord amid fears that Washington may pull out of the landmark deal. Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang made the remarks at a joint press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin. Merkel also hailed China's pledge during the conference. The Chinese prime minister was to declare Beijing’s adherence to the climate accord at the EU-China summit in Brussels on Thursday and Friday. The deal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions was struck at a 2015 conference in the French capital Paris with then American president Barack Obama pledging Washington’s support for the agreement. But current US president Donald Trump refused to sign up to his predecessor’s pledge at last week's G7 meeting in Italy. Trump was going to announce his decision on the Paris Accord later on Thursday.

Daesh atrocities

Daesh terrorists have attacked civilians fleeing western Mosul, killing at least seven people and injuring nearly two dozen others. The terrorists fired mortar shells at those who were trying to escape Zanjili district. Zanjili is part of the area that remains under Daesh’s control in the northern Iraqi city. Iraqi forces began their operations to capture Daesh’s last strongholds in Mosul’s west on May 27. The offensive, now in its eighth month, has taken much longer than expected, with Iraqi government advances slowed by the need to avoid civilian casualties.
