Kuwait looks forward to friendly ties with Iran: Premier
Kuwait’s prime minister tells the UN that the Persian Gulf monarchy seeks friendly ties with Iran based on “mutual respect.”
“I look forward to relations of friendship and cooperation with Iran with mutual respect and understanding,” Sheikh Jaber Mubarak al-Hamad al-Sabah said before the 71st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Wednesday.
The Kuwaiti premier further called for “constructive dialogue” between the two sides based on international regulations and the principles of “good neighborly” relations, according to the state-run Kuwait News Agency (KUNA).
It is important to create “the appropriate conditions for any constructive dialog to take place in accordance with the rules and norms of international law relating to the principle of good neighborly relations and respect [for] sovereignty of states and non-interference in their internal affairs,” KUNA quoted the official as saying.
However, the Kuwaiti official defended the United Arab Emirates’ claims to three Iranian islands in the Persian Gulf, urging Tehran to address the issue through “direct negotiations” or the International Court of Justice.
Tehran has repeatedly dismissed Abu Dhabi’s baseless claims of sovereignty to the Persian Gulf islands of the Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb and Abu Musa.
The three Persian Gulf islands have always been part of Iran historically, the proof of which can be found in and corroborated by countless historical, legal, and geographical documents in Iran and other parts of the world.
Sheikh Jaber further said the “practices that contravene international conventions and norms” pose a real threat to peace and stability in the Persian Gulf region.
Kuwait has been part of a Saudi-led coalition which has been involved in a deadly military campaign against Yemen with no UN mandate since March 2015.
The country has sent fighter jets to take part in the almost daily bombing of Yemen in an offensive aimed at restoring power to Riyadh-backed elements there.
