'Purps the Penguin' gets 3D printed boot

To create the boot, the middle school students scanned the existing cast using 3D Systems’ Capture 3D Scanner. This data were then imported into Geomagic Sculpt to be altered and customized.

An injured 23-year-old African penguin has been given a special walking boot by a group of middle-school children in the United States.

The school children managed to create the unique boot for the penguin with the help of 3d printing technology and veterinarians from the Mystic Aquarium.

The animal damaged her ankle after getting into a fight with another penguin five years ago and couldn’t walk properly.

So, the team decided to design a boot customized specifically for the penguin’s ankle.

The boot looks like a baby shoe and allows “Purps the Penguin” to go about her day waddling and swimming just like all the other penguins.
