Timeline of an attempted coup in Turkey against President Erdogan

The following is the timeline of the developments concerning the attempted coup against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Turkey in Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

1309 - Istanbul's airport reopens, flights resume after coup attempt

1243 - Turkish airlines official says flight schedule at Istanbul airport returns to normal, operational delays to occur

1203 - Self-exiled opposition figure Fethullah Gulen categorically denies accusations of role in attempted coup

1152 - Around 100 armed forces members detained at Diyarbakir air base in southeast turkey in relation to attempted coup, security sources say

1147 - Five members of Turkey's high judiciary court board HSYK removed following coup attempt: Anadolu

1145 - Turkish authorities remove 2,745 judges from duty: Broadcaster NTV

1121 - Greek govt. sources: Athens to examine political asylum requests of Turkish soldiers who fled to Greece

1050 - Erdogan vows 'heavy price' for plotters

1045 - Turkey urges Greece to extradite eight coup plotters who have requested political asylum

1001 - Yildirim: A total of 2,839 members of military arrested

1000 - Greece says eight arrested have requested political asylum

0954 - Turkish military helicopter lands in northern Greece, eight men on board arrested, Greek police ministry

0944 - Turkey's Yildirim: Those who form the backbone of the coup have been taken into custody

0943 - Russian airlines suspend regular flights to turkey after order from president Putin - Tass cites transport ministry official

0938 - Yildirim: Around 20 dead, 30 wounded among coup plotters

0935 - Yildirim: Situation fully under control, our commanders are in charge

0934 - Turkey's Yildirim says: will hold parliamentary meeting at 1200 gmt to discuss coup attempt

0930 - Turkey PM says 161 dead in Turkey coup attempt

0929 - Turkish PM Yildirim says 2,839 members of army have been detained. Detained military include ordinary soldiers and high-ranking officers

0921 - Turkish PM Yildirim: This has been an attempt by parallel structure in the armed forces. Members of parallel structure now in hands of Turkish justice

0921 - Turkish Prime Minister Yildirim says Friday night was a black stain for Turkish democracy adding the nation has given the best answer to terrorists

0902 - Turkey's EU minister Omer Celik says coup situation '90 percent under control', but some commanders still being held hostage

0856 – Sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, say pro-coup soldiers, who tried to attack Grand Yazici Marmaris Hotel in the southwestern city of Muğla, have fled the area. Erdogan had left the hotel hours earlier.

0852 - Airspace over Turkey's northwest Marmara region closed to civilian flights will resume at 1805 gmt, Anadolu agency, citing information sent to aviation authorities

0831 - Turkey's armed forces are determined to remove members of the "parallel structure" from
their ranks, the military's acting chief of staff Umit Dundar said.

0822 - Many Turkish military commanders have been taken hostage by soldiers who attempted a coup, the acting chief of staff of the armed forces, Umit Dundar said.

0802 - Turkey's acting army chief says coup attempt foiled

0801 - Turkey's acting chief of staff Dundar: coup attempt was largely by troops from air force, gendarmerie, some 'armored elements'

0759 - Operations to retake control of armed forces headquarters in Ankara still underway: T1urkish official

0758 - Turkish presidency on twitter: Another uprising attempt could be staged at any time, we should continue to stay in charge of the streets

0750 – At least 700 soldiers surrender to police in the capital, Ankara, after the failed coup attempt.

0707 – Turkey’s state-run Anadolu news agency says 90 people have lost their lives and more than 1,000 others sustained injuries across Turkey during the coup attempt.

 0652 - Turkey’s top judicial board convenes to decide on dissent judges and prosecutors following the failed coup attempt.

 0553 – At least 1,563 army personnel have been detained across Turkey following the coup attempt, according to the Interior Ministry.

 0544 - Turkish forces rescue General Hulusi Akar, Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces. Akar was held hostage by coup-attempting soldiers at Akinci air base, northwest of Ankara. He is moved to a safe location.

0100 - Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan appears among a group of supporters outside Istanbul’s international Ataturk Airport, saying the overnight coup attempt is against solidarity and unity of country, and no power is above national will.

0045 - Around 200 coup-attempting soldiers have surrendered themselves after armed security forces surrounded them at Taksim Square in downtown of Turkey's biggest city of Istanbul.

0045 – Turkish-language CNN Turk television news network stops live broadcast of events, after soldiers entered studio control room of the channel.

0027 - Two more explosions struck parliament, and lawmakers are hiding in shelters at the building.

0020 – A senior Turkish official, speaking on condition of anonymity,  says Erdogan's plane lands in Istanbul.

2352 - Turkish prime minister says the situation is under control, blames the self-exiled opposition figure, Fethullah Gulen for the coup attempt. He also declares a no-fly zone over Ankara.

2339 – Turkey’s state-run Anadolu news agency reported bomb explosions targeting the parliament.

2313 – An organization based in the US state of Pennsylvania denies involvement in the coup, describing accusations as “highly irresponsible.” It further denounces military intervention in Turkish politics, voicing concern over safety of citizens.

2304 - Anadolu new agency says 17 police officer have died following clashes at the country’s military headquarters in the capital, Ankara.

2259 – Local television news channel reports that Turkish fighter jet have shot down a military helicopter used by coup-plotters over Ankara.

2251 - Commander of Special Forces General Zekai Aksakalli says a group has engaged in a coup against the government, but they will not succeed. Aksakalli adds the military does not condone coup, and his special forces are in the service of the people.

2247 – Erdogan says gangs and illegal formations are behind coup attempt, and calls it a terrorist act. He says government remains in charge, asking people to take to the streets.

2237 - Commander of Turkey's First Army, General Umit Dundar, says those behind the coup attempt are a small faction and there is “nothing to worry about.”

2226 - Two loud explosions heard in center of the Turkish capital.

2208 - Tanks surround Turkish parliament building in Ankara, and fire shots. Gunfire heard at Istanbul airport as well.

2203 - Turkish Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag says supporters of Gulen in the army are behind the attempted coup.

2151 - A military helicopter opens fire over the Turkish capital Ankara. Eyewitnesses report an explosion in the capital.

2135 – The national public broadcaster of Turkey, known as TRT, goes off air, but later starts broadcasting from London.

2126 – The Turkish president asks people to take to the streets to protest against, what he describes as a coup attempt by a minority faction within the military. He tells CNN Turk news channel via a cellphone video link that he is returning to Ankara.

2122 - Turkish PM says on Twitter everything will be done to put down coup attempt, even if it means fatalities. He says some important buildings have been besieged, stopping short of specifying which ones. Erdogan also asks people to stay calm.

2118 – A presidential source says Erdogan and his government are still in charge.

2105 - Turkish state broadcaster, reading statement on the orders of the military, says a new constitution will be prepared. It accuses government of eroding democratic and secular rule of law, arguing that the country is being run by a "peace council". It announces the start of a nationwide martial law and curfew.

2102 – Soldiers enter Istanbul building of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP). They are told to leave the place.

2058 – Military forces are inside the buildings of the Turkish state broadcaster TRT in Ankara.

2057 - Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and other social media networks are restricted in Turkey.

2049 – A Turkish presidential source says statement made on behalf of armed forces has not been authorized by the military command.

2047 –General Hulusi Akar, Chief of the General Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces, is among hostages taken at military headquarters in Ankara.

2038 - CNN Turk reports that the Turkish president is safe and sound.

2025 – The Turkish military says has taken power to protect democratic order. It says all of the country’s existing foreign relations will be maintained.

2002 - Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim says an attempted coup is underway, calling for calm. He says a group within Turkey's military has attempted to overthrow the government and security forces have been called in to “do what is necessary.”

1950 - Gunshots are heard in Ankara. Military jets and helicopters are seen flying overhead. Helicopters are seen overhead in Istanbul.

1929 – Dogan news agency reports that Bosphorus Bridge and Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge in Istanbul are both sealed off, and cars and buses are being diverted.
