Iran concludes Rio Olympics volleyball qualifiers with win against Venezuela
Iran’s national volleyball team has put a glorious end to its campaign in the Men’s World Olympic Qualification Tournament in Japan, defeating the Venezuelan side in its final encounter.
On Sunday, the Iranian outfit, which had already secured a quota place for the high-status Rio 2016 Olympics with a 3-1 (25-20, 25-18, 20-25 and 34-32) victory over Poland the previous day, trounced the South American team 3-2 (25-23, 27-29, 21-25, 25-18 and 15-8) at the world-class Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium in the Japanese capital.
Even though Venezuela earned the first two points in the opening set, it was the Persians who raced to a 6-4 lead. Both sides continued on a point-by-point basis for a while, before Iranians went on collecting points and won the first set 25-23.
Venezuelan sportsmen returned to action afresh and seemed to have regained their composure. They made optimal use of their strengths and resources, and eventually clinched the second set 29-27.
The South Americans continued to push ahead after the breather and racked up more points to claim the third set 25-21.
The Iranian volleyball players regained the lead as the match extended into the fourth set. They widened the gap and were off 25-18 at last.
The Iranians maintained their dominant fashion afterward, and managed to beat the opposite side 15-8 and close the final set.
Mojtaba Mirzajanpour was the leading scorer for Iran with 24 points, while Venezuela’s top scorer, Willner Rivas, collected 21.
The Men’s World Olympic Qualification Tournament kicked off in Tokyo on May 28 and wrapped up on June 5.
