US Democratic presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders would both defeat Republican front-runner Donald Trump in a general election, a new poll shows.

According to the CNN/ORC survey released on Tuesday, Clinton, who is well ahead in the Democratic race for the presidency, leads Trump in a hypothetical matchup, with 52 to 44 percent.

Pollsters found that Sanders would also beat Trump, by a 55-to-43-percent margin.

The poll showed Trump has closed the gap with Sanders while Clinton has made gains against the New York billionaire.

In September of last year, both Trump and Clinton were tied with 48 percent apiece in the CNN/ORC poll.

Sanders, however, has lost ground to Trump since July last year, when he would have won by a 59-to-38-percent margin.

Meanwhile, two Republican presidential hopefuls, Florida Senator Marco Rubio and Texas Senator Ted Cruz, would both defeat Clinton in other theoretical matchups in the new poll.

Rubio tops Clinton, 50 to 47 percent, while Cruz edges past her, 49 to 48 percent.

Sanders, however, scored better against the pair of Republican White House contenders.

The Vermont senator takes 53 percent to Rubio’s 45 percent, and he beats Cruz in a hypothetical matchup, 57 to 40 percent.

According to a poll released Monday, Trump and Clinton were heading into the so-called Super Tuesday primary elections while holding big leads over their party rivals.

According to the CNN/ORC survey, Trump has solidified his lead over the GOP field in the race for the party’s final nomination with 49 percent support, more than all of his opponents combined.

The billionaire business man held a whopping 33-point lead over his closest rival, Rubio, who has 16 percent support.

Cruz was third with 15 percent support, followed by former neurosurgeon Ben Carson and Ohio governor John Kasich with 10 and 6 percent support respectively.

On the Democratic side, Clinton holds a 17-point lead over Sanders, 55 percent to 38 percent.
