4,000 people calling for trial of ‘war criminal’ Obama

More than 4,000 people have so far signed an online petition on the White House website, demanding the prosecution of US President Barack Obama for committing war crimes.

"We demand conviction of a war criminal Barack Obama and trial in the International Criminal Court in [The] Hague. He is guilty of crimes not only against the USA citizens, but against the whole world,” the petition reads.

The president’s failure to deliver on his 2008 campaign promise of closing down the notorious military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, is cited in the petition as another reason for holding Obama accountable.

Described in the petition as “one of the most dreadful prisons in history,” Guantanamo was established by former President George W. Bush’s administration in 2002 as a prison for alleged foreign terrorism suspects following the September 11, 2001, attacks.

Obama had promised to close the Guantanamo Bay prison in his 2008 election campaign, saying it is damaging America’s reputation abroad. However, he has so far failed to deliver on that pledge due to stiff opposition from Congress.

A Senate report in December 2014 revealed that the CIA has used a wide array of sexual abuse and other forms of torture on hundreds of detainees, who were brought to the prison without any trial.

The petition also touches on Obama’s record in dealing with various conflicts in the Middle East during his tenure as president, holding him responsible for the dire situation in countries like Libya and Syria.

“Libya was destroyed as a result of Obama’s aggression. In Syria, Obama’s agents train, fund and organize terrorist groups, deceitfully naming them ‘moderate opposition,’ who, among other things, bear a relation to Al-Qaeda, implicated in crimes against the American people,” the petition continues.

Washington’s illegal surveillance programs, ran by the country’s intelligence and security organizations, is the next reason the petitioners believe Obama needs to be held responsible for.

“Secret services collect the Americans’ personal data information on a 24-hour basis under the canopy battling terrorism, using electronic surveillance tools on political undesirables, effectively stomping on the Americans’ right for privacy,” the petition states.

If by March 9, the petition which was published on Monday gets 100,000 signatures, the White House administration will be required to respond to it.
