US Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders has significantly expanded his lead over front-runner Hillary Clinton in the key state of New Hampshire, according to the latest poll.

The Vermont senator is now leading the former secretary of state by 27 percentage points in the Granite State, a new CNN/WMUR poll has found.

Sanders is the favorite choice of 60 percent of likely Democratic primary voters in New Hampshire compared to 33 percent for Clinton.

The poll, mostly conducted before Sunday night’s Democratic presidential debate, showed that Sanders’ support in New Hampshire has grown by 10 points since early December, when the same poll put the Vermont senator at 50 percent and Clinton at 40 percent.

“This poll suggests that our campaign has real momentum and that the American people want to go beyond establishment politics and establishment economics. But it’s just a poll and we take nothing for granted,” Sanders's campaign manager Jeff Weaver said in a statement.

New Hampshire holds the nation’s first primary elections and is considered an early measurement of the national attitude toward the candidates.

Along with the Iowa caucus, the New Hampshire primary is the first in a series of nationwide party primary elections held in the United State every four years to choose the party nominees for the presidential elections to be held in the following November.

Even though Clinton continues to maintain her lead over Sanders nationally, her advantage has shrunk over the past month, a Monmouth University survey has found.

Sanders is now the choice of 37 percent of likely Democrats and Democratic-leaning voters while Clinton has the support of 52 percent, the poll, released Tuesday, showed.

Clinton held a 26-point lead over Sanders last month in the same poll.

Sanders’ emphasis on US income inequality and the influence of corporate money on elections as well as on the US government has made him widely popular with the party’s progressive base and the working class.
