Trump, Clinton still lead US presidential race: Poll
US presidential front-runners Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton continue to lead their party rivals nationally in the race for the White House, according to the latest poll.
In the Republican side, Trump has 38 percent support among Republican and Republican-leaning voters, according to the NBC News/SurveyMonkey weekly online poll.
US Senators Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio have 21 and 11 percent support respectively. Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson is at 8 percent.
In the Democratic contest, Clinton leads Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders nationally, 52 percent to 36 percent.
Despite Clinton’s lead nationally, she trails Sanders by about 14 points in the state of New Hampshire, which holds the nation’s first primary elections, a Monmouth University poll found last week.
Along with the Iowa caucus, the New Hampshire primary is the first in a series of nationwide party primary elections held in the United State every four years to choose the party nominees for the presidential elections to be held in the following November.
The New Hampshire primary has been considered an early measurement of the national attitude toward the candidates for the US presidential nomination.
Sanders’ emphasis on US income inequality and the influence of corporate money on elections as well as on the US government has made him widely popular with the party’s progressive base and the working class.
Facing a tougher than expected challenge from Sanders, Clinton’s campaign is preparing for a primary fight that could stretch into late spring, analysts say.
With Sanders’ campaign eroding Clinton’s once formidable lead, Clinton aides are acknowledging that the road to the party’s nomination is becoming more difficult.
Clinton’s campaign is also facing a host of challenges with the Republican candidates, who are raising questions about the past sexual affairs of her husband, former President Bill Clinton, as well as about her use of a private email sever to handle State Department business when she was secretary of state.
