White House demands Congress to authorize military action against Daesh

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest

The White House is pressing the Republican-weighted US Congress to authorize military action against the Daesh terrorist group in the wake of deadly attacks by the Takfiris in Paris.

On Monday, White House press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters in Paris that the Congress should not get engaged in politically-motivated posturing when it comes to Daesh as it is “wrong, dangerous and falls far short of what the America people deserve.”

Earnest pointed the finger at Congress as the reason behind the United States failure in the alleged fight against the militants.

The White House press secretary further slammed the Congress for not approving an Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) against the terror group, active mostly in Syria and Iraq.

“For more than a year, Congress has been AWOL on their responsibility to pass an Authorization for the Use of Military Force, which would demonstrate to our allies and to our enemies that the U.S. is united in its efforts to degrade and ultimately destroy ISIL,” Earnest said.

Since August 2014, the United States and some of its allies have been conducting airstrikes against what they say are Daesh positions in Iraq. Since last September, some members of the US-led coalition have also been pounding purported Daesh positions inside Syria without any authorization from Damascus or a UN mandate.

Despite the United States’ failure to dislodge the terrorists, the White House spokesman defended the so-called US-led coalition against Daesh.

“This effort is serious, and should be the focus of serious debate,” Earnest said. “It will take more than three weeks to pass an AUMF, but Congress, in each of these cases, must stop using the fact that these issues are difficult as an excuse for doing nothing.”
