Iran water polo team suffers loss in FINA Junior World Championships
Iran’s national junior water polo team has suffered its first loss at the 18th edition of Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA) Junior Men’s World Water Polo Championships in Kazakhstan, losing to European powerhouse Serbia.
On Sunday and day three of the sporting event in the city of Almaty, the young Iranian athletes went down to their Serbian counterparts 18-6 in a Group C fixture.
“As everybody know, Serbia is a very strong team and strong-minded to win the championship. Iranian players did their best, and were mostly slowing down the opposite side’s pace. Our main goal was to put on a defensive display, which we reasonably managed to accomplish,” Iran’s junior water polo player Mehdi Heidari said after the match.
Iran’s national junior water polo team is scheduled to face off with Australia on Monday, and will take on the Mexican squad the day after.
Croatia has been pitted against Egypt, Montenegro and South Africa in Group A. China, Greece, Hungary, Japan and the Netherlands form Group B.
Australia, Iran, Mexico and Serbia have been drawn in Group C. Canada, Italy, Kazakhstan, Spain and Uzbekistan are in Group D.
The 18th edition of the FINA Junior Men’s World Water Polo Championships started in Almaty, Kazakhstan, on September 4, and will finish on September 12, 2015.
The FINA Junior Water Polo World Championships is an international water polo tournament held every two years for the players under the age of 20. It was launched by FINA in 1981 for men and in 1995 for women.
