Former Democratic Congressman Anthony Weiner has refused to withdraw from New York City mayor race over another sexting scandal despite increasing numbers of calls on him to abandon his bid.

“This is entirely behind me," said Weiner, the leading candidate for NYC mayor during a news conference while his wife Huma Abedin was standing by his side.

"I'm sure many of my opponents would like me to drop out of the race," he added.

Weiner, who earlier confirmed he had a sexually explicit correspondence and exchanged photos with a young woman, said he committed the “wrong and hurtful” behavior before deciding to run for mayor.

"I said that other texts and photos were likely to come out and today they have," according to statement by Weiner’s campaign.

Weiner was forced to resign his congressional seat after a similar sexting scandal in 2011.

The new scandal made headlines after a gossip website published lewd online messages which were allegedly exchanged between Weiner and an unidentified 22-year old woman.

Some newspaper editorial pages, his rivals, a number of former congressional colleagues and some other politicians, both Democrats and Republicans, have called on Weiner to drop out of the race.

"I think he should pull out of the race. I think he needs serious psychiatric help," said Rep. Jerrold Nadler, one of his former congressional colleagues on Wednesday.

Rep. Joseph Crowley, Public Advocate Bill de Blasio and former City Councilman Sal Albanese, both Democrats as well as Republican billionaire businessman John Catsimatidis are among other people urging him to quit.
