Iran secured a historic direct promotion to the 2027 Davis Cup World Group II Play-offs after defeating Saudi Arabia to maintain its unbeaten run at the 2026 Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group III event in Malaysia.
Iran clinched the tie against Saudi Arabia by winning both singles matches and one double, sealing promotion.
Sina Moghimi gave Iran the perfect start with a 6-2, 7-6 victory over Saud Alhogbani, putting the team on the verge of securing its place in the World Group II Play-offs.
Ali Yazdani then completed the job with a straight-sets win over Ammar Alhogbani, taking the second singles match 6-3, 6-3.
In the doubles match, Iran’s Yunes Talavar and Ali Yazdani overpowered Saudi Arabia’s Faisal Alrebdi and Bader Idrees 6-4 and 6-1, to give Iran the final 3-0 victory.
The victory marked a historic milestone for Iran, which earned direct qualification from the Asia/Oceania Group III competition to the 2027 World Group II Play-offs for the first time.

Coached by Hamidreza Naddaf, Iran had already opened its campaign with victories over host Malaysia and Vietnam. The win against Saudi Arabia left the team one step away from claiming the Group III title.
The 2026 Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group III tournament is being held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with teams divided into two pools. Uzbekistan, the Philippines, Jordan and Singapore compete in Pool A, while Iran, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia and Vietnam make up Pool B.
The top three teams at the event will advance to the 2027 World Group II Play-offs.
Iran's achievement came despite significant challenges in its preparations. International hosting opportunities in the country were unavailable because of the US-Israeli aggression against Iran since February, forcing changes to the team's build-up.
The squad began its preparations in Tehran before competing on the ITF World Tennis Tour in Tunisia en route to Malaysia.
