Iran FM discusses regional issues, US talks with counterparts

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has held separate telephone conversations with his counterparts from Iraq, Turkey, and Qatar to discuss bilateral issues and the latest regional and international developments, including the Pakistan-mediated talks with the United States.

Araghchi spoke with Fuad Hussein of Iraq, Hakan Fidan of Turkey, and Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani of Qatar on Friday.

The Iraqi Foreign Ministry’s media office announced that Araghchi congratulated Hussein on his reappointment as Iraq’s foreign minister.

During the call, Araghchi discussed the latest developments regarding ongoing negotiations between Tehran and Washington, noting progress made in the previous round, particularly concerning a new negotiating document.

Both sides emphasized the role of Pakistan in this context, appreciating Islamabad’s efforts to support the success of the negotiations, and also noted Qatar’s participation in this stage.

On February 28, the United States and Israel initiated an unprovoked war against Iran with the assassination of Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and several high-ranking military commanders.

In response, the Iranian Armed Forces carried out 100 waves of counterattacks over 40 days, targeting US and Israeli military assets, which resulted in significant damage.

A Pakistani-mediated two-week ceasefire was brokered on April 8, where the Iranian delegation returned to Tehran without an agreement, citing deep mistrust regarding Washington’s willingness to honor its commitments.

For his part, Hussein expressed gratitude for the briefing on the negotiation results, voiced satisfaction with the positive progress observed in the talks, and stressed the need to work toward the lifting of sanctions on Iran.

He expressed hope that Iraq would soon receive positive news on an end to the war and the restoration of stability and normal life for the people of the region.

Separately, Araghchi also spoke by phone with Nechirvan Barzani, President of Iraq’s Kurdistan Region, early Saturday morning.

The two discussed bilateral relations between Iran and the Kurdistan Region, including economic and trade exchanges, strengthening coordination to maintain border security, and countering terrorism.

They also exchanged views on regional developments and the importance of regional countries working toward endogenous security.
