Iran-Russia cooperation based on responsible partnership: Putin aide

Iran’s envoy to Moscow, Kazem Jalali (L), shakes hands with Putin’s economic advisor, Anton Kobyakov, Moscow, Russia, May 12, 2026.

Russia and Iran are setting an example of responsible partnership through mutual respect and pragmatic cooperation, Anton Kobyakov, a financial adviser to President Vladimir Putin, said as Moscow and Tehran deepen their alliance.

Speaking after a meeting with Iran’s envoy to Russia, Kazem Jalali, on Tuesday, Kobyakov said, "The Iranian nation displayed that it will never surrender to the enemy and, with patience and resilience, achieved victory."

He also said that it is vital during difficult times to focus on mutually beneficial agreements, especially those that supply essential goods to citizens.

Kobyakov called Iran an important and influential member of the Eurasian region, adding that stronger economic cooperation would benefit both countries and other regional partners. He also invited Iran to showcase its economic potential at major Russian trade events.

He noted that Iran has expressed interest in jointly producing gasoline, diesel fuel, metallurgical products, and petrochemicals.

Jalali, in turn, praised Russia’s principled support for Iran. He said that the US and Israel had falsely assumed that assassinating the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Sayyed Ali Khamenei and senior military commanders would throw the country into chaos, a prediction he said was thwarted by public resilience.

The two sides discussed strengthening trade and economic ties, building sustainable supply chains, and preparing for a Russia-Iran trade meeting at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum in 2026.

They also explored cooperation in space technology, including satellite construction and launch projects.

Iran and Russia signed a comprehensive strategic agreement in January 2024 during President Masoud Pezeshkian’s visit to Moscow. The agreement took effect in October 2025 after parliamentary approval in both countries.
