Iran’s Red Crescent chief urges ICRC to take a firm stance against US-Israeli attacks on civilians

President of the International Committee of the Red Cross Mirjana Spoljaric is seen at the Iranian Red Crescent Society’s Peace Building in Tehran, on April 29, 2026.

Head of Iran’s Red Crescent Society Pir Hossein Kolivand has called on the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to take a firm stance against US-Israeli atrocities against civilians in the country.

ICRC president Mirjana Spoljaric Egger, who is visiting Tehran to assess the damage caused by 40 days of US-Israeli attacks, met with Kolivand at the Iranian Red Crescent Society’s Peace Building on Wednesday.

Kolivand detailed how the joint US-Israeli military aggression has taken a devastating toll on Iran’s civilian population.

He said that the relentless airstrikes targeted residential buildings and claimed thousands of civilian lives, including children and the elderly, across the nation.

According to Kolivand, at least 140,528 civilian sites have suffered severe damage or been completely destroyed. This includes 123,647 residential units, with 14,000 homes destroyed or damaged in Tehran alone, he said.

He told Spoljaric that the international community must not remain silent in the face of this brutal aggression.

Just as the ICRC “showed sufficient courage” and spoke out against Israel’s genocide in Gaza, he said, it must now “stand with the Red Crescent Society and the people of Iran.”

During the meeting, Kolivand also referred to the school massacre that took place on the first day of the war in the southern Iranian city of Minab, where US Tomahawk missiles struck Shajareh Tayyebeh Elementary School, killing at least 175 people, most of them schoolgirls.

He said rescue efforts in such devastating circumstances, where children were the primary victims, were among the most heartbreaking missions for the organization’s relief workers.

He said that the Iranian Red Crescent’s International Affairs department has detained every instance of humanitarian law violation and submitted the findings to international organizations to ensure legal accountability for these atrocities by the aggressors.

Kolivand said that extensive follow-ups have already been conducted through the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
