Iran, Qatar stress continuation of diplomacy towards preserving regional peace, stability

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi (R) and his Qatari counterpart Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani

Iran and Qatar underline the importance of continuation of diplomacy towards preservation of regional peace and stability, amid ongoing indirect talks between Tehran and Washington aimed at resolving outstanding issues concerning the Iranian nuclear energy program.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his Qatari counterpart Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani made the remarks during a telephone conversation on Friday.

During the call, Araghchi expressed appreciation for Doha’s efforts, along with those of other regional countries, in safeguarding the collective and shared interests of the region’s states.

He also informed Al Thani concerning the most recent developments in the talks, the latest round of which was held in Geneva on Thursday.

The third round of the Oman-mediated talks was held in the Swiss city at a building belonging to the Omani Embassy.

The negotiations resumed earlier in February nearly eight months after they were derailed by an Israeli-imposed war on Iran that was joined halfway by the United States, prompting decisive Iranian retaliation.

In a separate phone conversation on Friday with his Egyptian counterpart Badr Abdelatty, Araghchi likewise discussed the latest developments in the negotiations.

The Iranian top diplomat reiterated Tehran’s commitment to diplomacy, stressing that “success on this path requires seriousness and realism from the other party (the US) and [its] avoidance of any miscalculation and excessive demands.”

Also on Friday, Abdelatty contacted Steve Witkoff, the US’s regional envoy, who leads the American negotiating team in the talks, urging Washington to continue the path of diplomacy with Tehran and avoid triggering further escalation of regional tensions.
