The Palestinian resistance movement Hamas has slammed the Israeli prime minister’s latest statements about forming a new regional alliance that would include Arab countries, describing them as a "blatant disregard" for Arab states and a direct threat to their strategic interests.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Hazem Qassem, spokesperson for Hamas, said that Netanyahu is making an attempt to reshape the region in a way that serves only the interests of the occupying regime.
His remarks came after Benjamin Netanyahu claimed that Israel plans to build a network of allied states, including India, Greece, Cyprus, and a number of Arab, African and Asian countries.
The Israeli prime minister framed the proposed axis as a counter to both the "radical Shia axis," and an "emerging radical Sunni axis."
Netanyahu made these remarks while announcing the upcoming visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the occupied territories, and he added that India would be part of a so-called “axis of nations that see eye to eye” with Israel.
Qassem added that the Israeli regime seeks to form regional alliances with support from the US in order to advance its own interests, which are inherently in conflict with those of Arab states.
The Hamas official noted that such proposals are rooted in the weakness of the Arab countries’ positions throughout the genocidal war on Gaza.
He emphasized that any regional arrangement that ignores Palestinian rights will not contribute to stability of the region.
Qassem called on Arab states to realize the threat posed to them by such schemes, and their impact on the region's security and stability.
Qassem argued that Netanyahu's proposal reflects a disregard for the important role Arab states play in the region and seeks to advance Israeli interests, which he said are inherently at odds with those of Arab nations.
He characterized the envisioned entity as "foreign to the region and its history" and suggested it would rely on US support to lead regional alliances.
The Hamas official further linked the proposal to what he described as the perceived weakness in the Arab system's positions during the ongoing war in Gaza.
He warned that any regional arrangements that overlook Palestinian rights would fail to bring stability to the region.
Qassem called on Arab states to recognize the potential dangers of such initiatives and their implications for regional security and stability.
