The Palestinian Hamas resistance movement threw its support behind the UN special rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territory after France and Germany called for her resignation, condemning a coordinated campaign against the Italian-born legal expert.
In a Saturday statement, Hamas denounced the resignation demand as “a shameful expression of the political hypocrisy and double standards that govern the behavior of Western powers.”
It also “demonstrates a premeditated intention to punish [Francesca] Albanese for her firm positions rooted in conscience, human values, and in the spirit and texts of international and humanitarian law, as well as to terrorize every voice that seeks justice for our people and stand in solidarity with them.”
The Gaza-based group then questioned the exceptional status that the Israeli regime continues to enjoy, and places it above accountability.
“How do Western states overlook the urgent need to take practical measures to hold Israeli leaders accountable for their heinous crimes against humanity?” Hamas asked.
Hamas pointed out that the requirements of justice, and protection of international peace and security necessitate ending the Israeli occupation and enabling Palestinian people to exercise their right to freedom, return and self-determination.
France and Germany have called for Albanese to step down over remarks last weekend during a forum in the Qatari capital Doha, in which she referred to a “common enemy of humanity” after criticizing “most of the world” and the media for enabling Israeli genocide in Gaza.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot called for her to resign, saying that France “unreservedly condemns the outrageous and reprehensible remarks.”
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul asserted on Thursday that her position was "untenable".
Albanese stands out as one of the most vocal opponents of Israel's more-than-two-year bombardment of Gaza which has resulted in the deaths of over 70,000 people and the destruction of most of the territory's infrastructure.
She has described genocide “the shame of our time” and says she always asks prime ministers, presidents and foreign ministers the same question: “How do you sleep? When will you act?”
Albanese was targeted with sanctions by the Trump administration in July last year.
